King Starboard is the leading marine grade plastic sheet -- used as the base construction material for thousands of boat component parts. Dolphin Gray starboard is a traditional gray color available in 1/2" or 3/4" thickness.

Key Features:

  • Standard Grey Color Starboard
  • CNC cut for a clean uniform edge appearance – no blade marks
  • Easy to fabricate using standard woodworking tools
  • Will not rot, swell, splinter or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water
  • Durable matte-textured surface
  • Easy to clean and never needs refinishing
Works Like Wood, Lasts a Lifetime!

King Starboard is the original and leading marine grade boat plastic polymer sheet building material. Since its introduction, it has been the choice boat building material for marine parts previously made from teak wood. Nothing on the water maintains it's original color and structural integrity longer.

King Starboard simply cannot rot or delaminate, and it is virtually maintenance free. It's unique polymer formula is environmentally stabilized to deliver a previously unattainable level of consistency and resistance to the elements. It is easy to clean and never needs refinishing. King Starboard plastic lumber is available in a variety of colors and sheet thicknesses and can be easily cut and machined using standard wood working tools.

King Starboard is used exclusively by Teak Isle Mfg., the leading OEM supplier for component plastic marine products. Experienced boat builders and boaters know the King Starboard brand and trust it above all others.

For the marine industry: Access Doors, Center Console Doors, Transom Doors, Hatches, Tackle Storage Units, Drawer Units, Step Pads, Swim Platforms, Rod Holders, Tray Tables, Step Boxes, Anchor Chocks, Bow Pulpits, Fender Mounts, Deck Boxes, Step Boards (Gunwales), Sink Covers, Shower Grates, Dive Platforms, Cutting boards, Cabin Molding, Step Treads (Ladders), Electronics Mounting, Mounting Platforms, Fender Mounts, Upholstery Backs

Other Applications: Exterior Cabinetry, Summer Kitchens, Playground Equipment, Swings, Benches, Ottomans, Adirondacks, Shelving, Storage, Bars & Cabanas, Bathroom Partitions, Medical Carts, Shower Seats, Motor Mounts and Spacers, Lockers, Locker Room Benches, Engraved Signs, Pool Pump Bases.

King Starboard has three limitations to consider-
  1. It cannot be glued
  2. It cannot be painted
  3. It has less structural rigidity than wood
While there is some debate regarding gluing Starboard, we have never found an adhesive that we've tested and trust to structurally adhere Starboard. We would advise caution and skepticism if anyone tells you differently and we always recommend using mechanical fasteners with Starboard.

Paint (including polyurethanes) simply will not adhere to Starboard and upon drying will easily peel away.

Structural Rigidity
While Starboard is incredibly durable (and nearly impossible to actually break), it does not have the same structural rigidity as wood. For example - If you lean a piece of Starboard against the wall in your hot garage, you will return the next day and it very likely would have started to flex a bit.

The degree of this "flex" will vary by material thickness, but depending on your application, parts fabricated from King Starboard may require some metal stiffeners. If you have questions about your intended use, we'd encourage you to give us a call at 866-633-7961 to discuss if stiffeners would be required.

Starboard Ski Locker Door
I ordered a sheet of the 3/4” dolphin gray starboard to redo the ski locker door in my 99 bayliner capri. I wanted a product that would not rot like plywood after a few years. King starboard lived up to the hype the only thing I wish I had it precut to fit my needs. I did manage to cut the starboard with a jigsaw and sand it down with a DA sander but it wasnt a walk in the park. Overall Im pleased with how it turned out and glad I purchased from 5 STARS

Can this starboard Hold a 200 pound man in my boat engine room?
A shopper on Dec 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We do use 3/4" Starboard for deck hatches that are walked on so it definitely can, the main considerations are what size you would need and how well it is supported underneath. Those would be the determining factors in how it would work for your application. If you would like to discuss the specifics of your project please feel free to give us a call and we can see what we can work out for you.
I note that King Starboard can't be glued and should be mechanically fastened - but can it be sealed (say with 5200) so that the joint doesn't leak?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello, sealant can be used but you would want to use it more as a gasket rather than applying it after the pieces are fastened you would want it in and use the added pressure of the fasteners holding the 2 pieces together to help keep it in place. Depending on your application sealant may not keep all water out but it should help.
Would King Starboard be rigid enough to be attached over aluminum siding and have a residential 2 socket electrical meter channel mounted to it? Will it hold the screws required to do so?
A shopper on Dec 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello, Starboard could definitely work for you there. Starboard holds screws very well, as far as the rigidity it would really depend on what thickness you were planning on using and how it was supported. When we build a deck hatch that will be walked on we typically use 3/4" material for openings up to roughly 30" x 18" just to give you some type of reference but if you would like to discuss your project directly please feel free to give us a call and one of sales associates would be happy to assist you.
does gray starboard come in 1 1/2" thickness?
A shopper on Nov 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately we only carry Dolphin Gray Starboard in 1/2" and 3/4" thickness but depending on your project you may be able to stack the pieces to get to the required thickness.
How much does a sheet of 1/2"x54"x96" weigh?
scott b on Nov 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is a great question. A 1/2" thick 54"x96"piece of starboard weighs 90 lbs.
Will vinyl letters/graphics stick to it?
Can you sandblast graphics? Can you route/cut with cnc machine
Tina on Sep 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello Tina, you can definitely cut and route the material on a CNC router, that is actually how we cut all of the material here in house. As far the letters and graphics, nothing will really bond to Starboard and I have not heard of attempting to sandblast graphics in. When we do any lettering or graphics they are routed in when the piece is cut, it can just get pretty time consuming with the engineering time involved. Please let us know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else we can do for you.

Suitable for dash 26 in long x 9 in wide? Dash has steering wheel two gauges and radio. Please recommend thickness? Thanks Bill D.
Bill D on Sep 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Bill, the starboard material will work very well for what you are looking to do. I would recommend 1/2" thick or 3/4" thick, depending on how much weight/unsupported area there will be. Thanks Bill!
Hi again. To revise my question... I'm only talking a slight bend to match the cabin top?
Collin M on Jun 13, 2018
Starboard does have slight flexibility and mild heat can be applied with a heat gun, this will help mold the sheets for curved applications
Hi. Can starboard be heated at a low temperature to accept a curve when fastened down?
Collin M on Jun 13, 2018
Mild heat can be applied with a heat gun, this will help mold the sheets for curved applications.
What temperatures will Dolphin Gray King Starboard Plastic Sheets withstand?
Paul G on May 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great Question! As with most type of plastic materials, King StarBoard will melt if exposed to extreme heat. Its not recommended for operating temperatures of over 150º Fahrenheit. Heat sources such as hot plates and warmers can mar the finish as well.
How much does 1/2"x27"x15" weigh?
benjamin b on Apr 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great question. A piece of this material at these dimensions would weigh roughly 7 lbs.
I want to replace a teak grate in the cockpit of my Hunter Legend. The current grate has 1"x15/16" slats with an inch opening between them. The overall dimension is 25"x11" with two of the corners cut off at a 45 degree angle. I am also considering drilling holes in it to mimic the grid work on the teak that is now there. Would the starboard support a healthy 250# deck ape and would 1" holes at 1'" intervals weaken it too much? Also, is it non skid?
A shopper on Apr 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great question! This definitely seems like a project we would be able to help you with. Also, we do offer non-skid starboard. Please feel free to reach out to us to discuss the project in detail.
For my application, I would want to apply contact cement and adhere outdoor carpet to the exposed side in my cabin, would the contact cement hold up? or like previous posts stated, "nothing really sticks to the Starboard"?
