What Makes a Bolt Marine Grade?

Whether you are new to boating or not, ventilation is something that you should not take for granted. On a boat, it is not just important for ensuring that you have a comfortable and enjoyable time on the water; it can be a matter of life and death. Proper ventilation is required by law on many boats, so you need to understand the how and why of ventilating your boat.

To help you, here at Boat Outfitters, we have put together this guide to boat ventilation.

Through Bolting Materials

When installing accessories and boat building, through bolting is the most secure way to fasten materials. Through bolting is the process of drilling a pilot hole and passing a bolt through all layers of attached material. A nut and washer are then attached to the end of the bolt, securing it in place. When installing accessories and boat building, through bolting is the most secure way to fasten materials. Through bolting is the process of drilling a pilot hole and passing a bolt through all layers of attached material. A nut and washer are then attached to the end of the bolt, securing it in place.

The advantage of through bolting is that the attachment between the threads of the bolt and nut is much stronger than the attachment of screw threads to the substrate. This ensures all levels of material are properly secured.

Let's explore each type in detail to understand their unique applications aboard vessels.

Flat Head Bolts

Flat head bolts, also known as countersunk bolts, are bolts with a tapering conical head that insets into the mounting surface. The distinct advantage of using a flat headed bolt is that it does not protrude above the mounting surface.

Flat head bolts are perfect for application in visible areas. The low-profile design makes a more visually appealing presentation.

Pan Head Bolts

Pan head bolts are one of the most common types of stainless steel fasteners. These bolts are non-countersunk and have a wide, flat bearing surface on the bottom of the head. Pan heads are most often used to fasten metal to metal, or other materials to metal.

Oval Head Bolts

Oval head bolts are countersunk bolts with a domed head. Oval head bolts do not sit completely flush with the mounting surface and are more for an aesthetically pleasing look. Because of the raised design of oval head bolts, they are not the best choice if you are looking for a smooth, flush finish.

Truss Head Bolts

Truss head bolts have an oversized head with a flat bearing surface on the bottom and a low profile domed shape on top. Truss head bolts are ideal for installing electronics and other things that require low clearance.

Due to the low-profile design of truss heads, they are great in high-humidity environments like boats and docks.

Stainless Steel Boat Bolts

Stainless steel is the most corrosion-resistant, longest-lasting marine material available. Because of this, it is the most common material for marine bolts. Marine-grade stainless bolts are the industry standard and come in several coatings to increase corrosion resistance and help blend into highly visible areas.

Powder-Coated Marine Grade Bolts

Powder-coated bolts are used in highly visible areas where hidden bolts are needed. By changing the color of the bolt, it is less likely to be seen. Powder coating also adds increased corrosion resistance to the bolt.

There are several available colors to help find the perfect match for your hull or deck.

Chrome Plated Stainless Steel Bolts

Chrome plating adds a high sheen finish to your bolt and adds eye appeal. Chrome is the most popular finish color and is widely available. Stainless steel bolts for marine use look great with a chrome finish and are highly practical as well.
