King Starboard is the leading marine grade plastic sheet -- used as the base construction material for thousands of boat component parts. It is easily fabricated with standard woodworking tools and environmentally and UV stabilized to last in the harsh marine environment. Black King Starboard does get very hot and is not recommended for products exposed to the sun that will be stepped on, touched or handled.

Key Features:

  • Standard Black Color Starboard
  • CNC cut for a clean uniform edge appearance – no blade marks
  • Easy to fabricate using standard woodworking tools
  • Will not rot, swell, splinter or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water
  • Durable matte-textured surface
  • Easy to clean and never needs refinishing
Works Like Wood, Lasts a Lifetime!

King Starboard is the original and leading marine grade boat plastic polymer sheet building material. Since its introduction, it has been the choice boat building material for marine parts previously made from teak wood. Nothing on the water maintains it's original color and structural integrity longer.

King Starboard simply cannot rot or delaminate, and it is virtually maintenance free. It's unique polymer formula is environmentally stabilized to deliver a previously unattainable level of consistency and resistance to the elements. It is easy to clean and never needs refinishing. King Starboard plastic lumber is available in a variety of colors and sheet thicknesses and can be easily cut and machined using standard wood working tools.

King Starboard is used exclusively by Teak Isle Mfg., the leading OEM supplier for component plastic marine products. Experienced boat builders and boaters know the King Starboard brand and trust it above all others.

For the marine industry: Access Doors, Center Console Doors, Transom Doors, Hatches, Tackle Storage Units, Drawer Units, Step Pads, Swim Platforms, Rod Holders, Tray Tables, Step Boxes, Anchor Chocks, Bow Pulpits, Fender Mounts, Deck Boxes, Step Boards (Gunwales), Sink Covers, Shower Grates, Dive Platforms, Cutting boards, Cabin Molding, Step Treads (Ladders), Electronics Mounting, Mounting Platforms, Fender Mounts, Upholstery Backs

Other Applications: Exterior Cabinetry, Summer Kitchens, Playground Equipment, Swings, Benches, Ottomans, Adirondacks, Shelving, Storage, Bars & Cabanas, Bathroom Partitions, Medical Carts, Shower Seats, Motor Mounts and Spacers, Lockers, Locker Room Benches, Engraved Signs, Pool Pump Bases.

King Starboard has three limitations to consider-
  1. It cannot be glued
  2. It cannot be painted
  3. It has less structural rigidity than wood
While there is some debate regarding gluing Starboard, we have never found an adhesive that we've tested and trust to structurally adhere Starboard. We would advise caution and skepticism if anyone tells you differently and we always recommend using mechanical fasteners with Starboard.

Paint (including polyurethanes) simply will not adhere to Starboard and upon drying will easily peel away.

Structural Rigidity
While Starboard is incredibly durable (and nearly impossible to actually break), it does not have the same structural rigidity as wood. For example - If you lean a piece of Starboard against the wall in your hot garage, you will return the next day and it very likely would have started to flex a bit.

The degree of this "flex" will vary by material thickness, but depending on your application, parts fabricated from King Starboard may require some metal stiffeners. If you have questions about your intended use, we'd encourage you to give us a call at 866-633-7961 to discuss if stiffeners would be required.

Worked Great
I wanted a drink/tool holder for the front of my boat, but did not have enough room in the recessed foot pedal for the trolling motor, I have a deck it mount for my fish finder so I mounted on there and made holes for a cup holder and 3 tools.

Really love the new black background gave the whole dash a brand new look!
Project add 2nd Garmin to dash. Ordered and changed over to Black Starboard. Rearranged the entire dash. Relocated the VHF also the USB 12V charger is now on the top out of site.
The black background really makes the Garmin units pop cuts out glare. Plan to sell the white VHF and buy a black one in the future. The only change I would do now was in the thickness of the starboard. Only sizes available was 1/4” & 1/2” I went with the 1/4”. If I were to do over I would have gone with the 1/2” for a little more rigidity and I still may do that in the future. 5 star if it was 1/2”.
“AFTER” rearranged added a Garmin Changed dash to black starboard background & love the new look.

Thousands of uses ! Let your imagination go.
Another satisfied consumer of the Starboard product. Actually I’ve used the product for fabricating a variety of things for myself and its always worked exemplarily. Yes its pricey even for what most would consider scrap pieces but I've never have to fix or replace it.

Is a 27X12 (.5 thickness) plank strong enough to mount two mailboxes on (one on each side of a single post)?
Blaine on Sep 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi William, I would suggest using 3/4" or larger for this as the constant weight of the mail box will cause the material to sag over time if it is not fully supported. Thank you!
I need to replace the mahogany chocks that are screwed to the deck and then the console of my 1984 BW Montauk is screwed into the side. Will starboard hold screws and be a good replacement material for this application?
Chad P on Jun 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello Chad, Starboard would be a great choice for that type of application. The material holds screws very well, adhesives really do not bond well to Starboard so all of the units we build use mechanical fasteners to hold them together. It will cut and sand the same way as if you were working with wood.
Are these available in red?
A shopper on Apr 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great Question,

We, unfortunately at this time do not carry a red starboard product.

Can y’all sell 8ft x 2ft planks ?
Jose B on Mar 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great Question Jose,

We certainly can take care of that! If you go to scroll down bar next to the word "size". you can choose custom and have the length and width cut using that tool. Then just add the quantity you may need and we can ship it out to you.

Thanks Jose
I am looking at SKU 13770-42004-10. Is this hdpe?
A shopper on Mar 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great question,

This product, much like most King Starboard products, is a High-density polyethylene (HDPE).

I need a sheet of 1/4" thick black starboard for my aquarium bottom.
Before purchasing I wanted to ask if specifically what the routing option for this product is?
I'm assuming the routing is just running the router along the bottom if the edges so that the board will sit flat on the bottom of the tank regardless of the silicon seals that run along all of the inside edges?

Can you please clarify this for me?
Philip cipriano
Philip cipriano on Aug 10, 0017
BEST ANSWER: Hello Phillip, you are correct, the routing would round off the edges on either one side or both depending on your selection. When you are one of the cut to size pages in the thumbnail section you will see a picture of the material stacked on top of each other and it shows the different sizes of routes available. Please let me knwo if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can do for you.
Will this work as a kitchen sink cover? Will it be strong enough?
Nadia G on Jan 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, very strong, good that it won’t take on odors or contamination,,use 1/2 inch,,give outfitters a pattern or measurement and thy will cut it exactly,,tell them if you need a lifting hole in it,,it cuts so clean that the cut edges can be a little sharp,,tell them you want all edges including the hole rounding slightly,,it’s an incredible product,,,one thing that’s amazing is that there is no glue or anything that will bond to it,,if any one assemble PCs together, must be screwed,, I’m constantly find other uses for it in and outside the house,,,I would not put into dishwasher,,,have no experience with that,,,,,
Could I use this to make shed doors with proper weight bearing framework.?
cheryl on Aug 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello Cheryl, this would really depend on the actual dimensions of the door to give you a better answer, if you would like send me over some information on your project I would be happy to see what we can work for you. You can send that to Have a great weekend!
Do you guys offer the black starboard material in 1/8 inch thickness? The thinnest I found was 1/4 inch?
John E on Jan 17, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Great Question John!

Unfortunately, 1/4" is the thinnest material that we carry in starboard.

Thanks John!
Suppose I wanted to build a 24" x 15" tabletop out of 3/4" black marine starboard to support a small grill. Could you recess four holes in the center of the tabletop to perfectly align with the Magma Levelock Rod Holder Mount bolt hole pattern? Thanks!
Eric W on Jun 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hey Eric, Great Question! It sounds like this is definitely something that we can do! Give us a call at 866-633-7961 and we'll be more than happy to try and make this happen for you.
I have a cuddy cabin hatch (from the cockpit to the cabin) that needs replacing. The current one is made of polycarbonate, and has a crack in it. The current one also has a 90 degree bend and a 30 degree bend. So my question is can this material be heated up and bent into a new shape?
Bill D on Apr 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Bill, You certainly can bend Starboard with heat. It is probably easiest to bend it over something while using a heat gun.
When using Starboard what weather stripping do you recommend when building a cargo door? How much room do you allow for the weather stripping?
Rockshow on Apr 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: My application didn't require weather stripping. Everything I made was screwed on with 4200. I used Starboard because it doesn't expand or retract like Azek does.
Replacing electronics on Center Console off shore boat. need to start over with new black background/mounting surface then cut out for GPS and fish finder, quarter inch or half inch??? recommended?
MikeR on Dec 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Michael, If the starboard is being fully supported by a fiberglass console behind it then 1/4" would work. If it is supporting electronics and gauges by itself then 1/2" or even 3/4" will be necessary.
How strong is this? I am building a custom pc, and need a panel to support OVER 100lbs, as a fully water cooled system will be in the center. I am worried about bowing/cracking etc, as this will be permanent
BigMike on Nov 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mike, starboard is a strong material in the sense that it does not break like wood. Starboard will flex much more than wood before it breaks. This being said, we do not use anything less than 3/4" starboard for an application that requires supporting heavy loads. Please reach out to directly for more information. Thank you!
Is it possible to get the black 1/2" with the anti-skid texture? Looking for a 24 x 27 piece.
Bob L on Oct 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Bob, unfortunately at this time we do not have the anti skid starboard in black. We only carry it in White/White, Arctic White, and Seafoam White. Thanks!
If I ordered a 54" x 24" sheet in 1/2" thickness, could I have a "half moon" radius cut out of the 54" length on the center (27") I'm trying to custom build a road splash shield that will fit up against the lower part of a fan shroud in a Chevy. I'll need to measure the radius of the fan shroud and the depth needed to cut into the 24" length. Perhaps this would be too costly and I'd be better off cutting it with a jigsaw?
Michael P on Aug 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Great question. This is something we could definitely do for you. Please give us a call to discuss the project.
Can Black Starboard be used on a boat transom? Will be used underwater (salt) and used for transducer mounting. Black Starboard mounts to the transom and transducer mounts to the Black Starboard.
Charlie W on Aug 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello Charlie, that is great question that has com up a few times, since nothing really bonds well to Starboard you would still have to use fasteners to attach the transom. We do carry expanded PVC board which will hold better with adhesive but it has a cellular edge so it is nto quite as clean looking as the Starboard.

I hope this helps and please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you.
what is the minimum thickness you carry.?......Im looking for 1/8 inch thickness
david s on Jul 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello David, for the starboard material the smallest thickness we carry would be 1/4" thick. Thank you.
I’m building an aluminum framed deck on my flat bottom boat. Will a 1/2” sheet of this work well to use for the floor of the deck? Will it warp with sunlight and will it support weight of me fishing from the deck ?
Brandon H on May 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Brandon,
It does not have the same structural rigidity as wood. For example - If you lean a piece of Starboard against the wall in your hot garage, you will return the next day and it very likely would have started to flex a bit.
The degree of this "flex" will vary by material thickness, but depending on your application, parts fabricated from King Starboard may require some metal stiffeners.
I hope this answers your question.
let us know if we can help you with anything else.
What are standard sizes?
A shopper on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello, we offer Starboard cut to any dimensions you would like on the site but also have some standard sizes listed in the "Size" drop down on the page. These are just dimensions that offer a little better sheet yield so they are a little more cost effective than ordering the custom cut pieces.

I hope this helps and please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you.
How heavy is a .25" thick 54x24 piece?
A shopper on Nov 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Great Question. A 1/4" thick piece 54"x24" would weigh 11 lbs.
I’m looking for a material that is strong but light weight to cover the entry step area in a MotorHome. The opening is 24 by 32 inches and is supported on 3 sides. It would need to be strong enough to support a person standing on center. Will this material work? What thickness material would work?
